Research Scientist – Lead Discovery & Biochemistry

The Opportunity:

X-Chem is a drug discovery company that uses DNA-encoded library (DEL) technology to discover leads for therapeutic targets. As a world leader in DEL technology, X-Chem collaborates with numerous pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, resulting in over 85 licensed programs to date.

X-Chem is seeking candidates for a full-time position of Research Scientist, Lead Discovery & Biochemistry. The primary opportunities for a new team member would be i) performing biophysical protein characterization, ii) developing and performing biochemical or biophysical assays for screening and characterizing small molecules and iii) plan and manage cellular assays at external CROs as an essential part of partnered drug discovery campaigns.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform standard biophysical protein characterization such as SEC-MALS, DLS, Thermal melt assessment to determine suitability for DNA-Encoded Chemical Library screens.
  • Develop, validate and perform in vitro biophysical and biochemical assays to confirm binding or activity of compounds identified from DNA-Encoded Chemical Library screens.
  • Opportunity to plan and manage cellular assays at external CROs for a variety of programs.
  • Work closely with members of other disciplines within a matrixed organizational structure to deploy X-Chem’s DNA-Encoded Chemical Library technology to support a range of external projects.
  • Communicate observations, interpretations and conclusions internally and externally.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • S or higher degree preferred, with degree of study in biochemistry, biology, chemical biology, or equivalent
  • >=4 years of industry experience or equivalent experience with small molecule drug discovery is also required preferably in hit discovery
  • Ability to independently develop, validate, analyze and troubleshoot biochemical or biophysical assays with a variety of formats such as FRET, FP, AlphaScreen/LISA, ADPGlo
  • Familiarity with protein characterization techniques (SEC-MALS, DLS, DSF, TSA)
  • Ideal candidates would have experience in developing, validating, performing cellular assay with a variety of formats such as target degradation, luciferase reporter, cellular proliferation, biomarker-based, NanoBret. Experience managing cellular assays at external CROs a plus.
  • Attractive candidates will have a demonstrated track record of high quality and timely data generation, excellent communication skills, and should have the ability to independently solve problems in a fast-paced, team-oriented small company focused on applying innovative technologies to drug discovery with multiple projects advancing simultaneously.
  • Experience with SPR or similar biophysical assays is a plus
  • Experience with an affinity-based drug discovery technology such as DNA-encoded chemistry, SELEX, mRNA Display is a plus
